Fire Ants

If you are attacked by a fire ant colony, shaking it like Shakira is not the most effective strategy.

TheControlFire Ants.com website advises using professionally formulated baits to combat these damaging and dangerous pests.

Here is a neat and scary fact that I picked from the site. The sure fire way to determine whether an ant population are fire ants is to jab a stick into their mound and leave it there. Fire ants will frantically race up and down the stick trying to attack what they perceive to be an invader. Do not hold on to the stick. I have been bitten by several different species of ants while picking berries. I have heard that fire ants have the worst bite. Ant bites are nasty.
