Shakira's appearance on last season's American Idol no doubt caused a boost in the ratings. I was actually surprised to see how much it did for her record sales. This is a quote from AP reporter Sandy Cohen:
"Shakira's new album, Oral Fixation Vol. 2, jumped 11 spots on the Top 40 charts after her hip-shaking Idol performance."That's not as impressive as Barry Manilow's climb from 24 to 4, but his stats had more room for improvement than Shakira.
Most guest stars are nice and friendly to the contestants. Prince made headlines by being anything but nice. There were rumors that Shakira was distant herself. There seems to be more discussion about her Diva behavior in comment sections than anywhere else. I can't find a legitimate source quoting Simon Fuller as saying that Shakira was rude. I actually feel a bit disgusted after scouring through the negative comments in different corners of the internet. I suspect that some of the vitriol put forth stems from racism.
